Amarillo, Texas, exists on a long stretch of nothing— which makes it feel like an oasis when approaching. If I need to eat food in the hours before reaching Amarillo, I grab a snack at a convenience store and wait— because Yellow City Street Food is WORTH the wait.
Nestled into a totally nondescript little shack with a low-slung roofline, Yellow City is a haven for vegetarians and vegans in meat-obsessed Texas.
Reader: I’m not complaining, but being a vegetarian in Texas is a huge drag.
Thus, when I reach it, Yellow City is often my first solid meal in awhile. They have ‘grub’ food— burgers, fries, and the lot— but they execute them beautifully. The menu has a slightly southern bend to it: there’s remoulade and other flavors that don’t come to play.

While it might not look too gorgeous in the pictures, Yellow City’s food is extremely well-seasoned, well-prepared, and fresh— even their buns are made in-house. They have a delectable selection of local beers on-tap, though because I am driving, I opt for Topo Chico most often.
Crispy fries, awesome tots, AND an Impossible Burger to die for, on top of a comfortable, silly atmosphere that doesn’t take itself too seriously is a “win” in Texas. The proprietors are tattooed and friendly, and they proudly display a “Wu-Tang is Forever” sign in the window.
What’s not to like? Save your hunger on the road for Yellow City Street Food.
