Scene Around: First Javelina Sighting

The first time I saw a Javelina, it was after dark. I was driving, and braked hard when something ran across the road.

Emphasis on the SOMETHING– I couldn’t make it out. My eyes and my brain were fighting each other– what WAS that? My brain was coming up empty, asking my eyes for more information, because the silhouette was totally unique to me.

It looked like an alien– squat legs that moved rapidly, and a large head, with a small hog-like body.

I gripped the steering wheel hard. And then realized with relief, after five full minutes of head-scratching confusion, that I’d just seen my first Javelina.

Also called the “skunk pig,” Javelinas only live in a few areas in the country– and they are weird looking. No, I didn’t get a photo that night– you’ll have to Google it and read about these weird-looking wild-boar-like, pig-like, creatures.
