Roadside Nonsense: The International Car Forest of the Last Church

We tend to “jerk the wheel” when we see something unusual– on the road, it’s an urge you HAVE to allow yourself to give into. In our experience, if you’re too focused on a destination, or ‘making time’ when driving– you miss nearly 100% of the good stuff.

Somewhere in middle-of-nowhere Nevada, barely marked on a map, we came upon a small sign for something called The International Car Forest of the Last Church. The what, we thought?

Well, that is left purposely ambiguous. There was no sign on the grounds denoting the reason this was created, or why it exists– which made for a disconcerting experience. Without any sense of story, the mind reeled to explain it and fill in the unknowns– an impossible task.

The wind whipped through the cars and trucks and buses that were strewn about, as if a freak tornado had picked them up and deposited them there. It provided absolutely a stunning, out-of-body sights.

Later, we learned this was created by two artists– Chad Sorg and Mark Rippie– who collected and buried over 40 automobiles of all sizes in the desert as part of a project. Very little has been written about them since.

The International Car Forest was a fantastic reminder that not everything needs a detailed explanation– and that mysteries can be a joy to experience.
